Advocating for environmental sustainability

The description of the campaign focuses on two issues:

1. to engage local farmers to apply appropriate farming techniques- climate smart agriculture

2. engage local authorities to allocate readily available agricultural lands to farmers to farm using organic methods, to improve crop production rather than clearing new land every year.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES

The objectives were to increase crop productivity, to alleviate poverty (through food self sufficiency), and reduce deforestation.

HOW THE OBJECTIVES WERE ACHIEVED

Several consultative meetings with key stakeholders within the sector.

CAMPAIGN INNOVATIONS

Some of the initiatives employed include a press conference, publication of a monthly magazine, contribute newspaper columns to publish on the issues, community radio programs and school based activities to catch young children on the importance of protecting the environment.

CAMPAIGN IMPACT

it has made great impact on the lives of the local farmers as the new technology from the agricultural extension workers are been fully utilized and their level of understanding increased.

CHALLENGES FACED

The biggest challenges is inadequate finance. Most of the resources used were self sponsored and the demand for the initiative is very high and cannot reach everyone.

LESSONS LEARNT

The local farmers have little or no knowledge, even though the presence of climate change could be felt.
