End early marriages to child brides in rural areas

Early marriages in Zambian rural areas is going up at an alarming rate, hence children are being pushed out of school through pregnancy and the large percentage of illiterate parents, for gain due to the high level of poverty. We have partnered with the traditional leadership (the chiefs) to try and educate the parents and the rural community at large.
Our cause can be achieved only if reinforced with resources like transport, as basic as motor bikes, because the rural areas in our region are vast.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES

1. To sensitize the rural community to the bad vices of the girl child early marriage.
2. To support rural girls in primary and community schools.
3. To conduct awareness education with the traditional leaders on early marriages for girls.

HOW THE OBJECTIVES WERE ACHIEVED

We involved the traditional leaders whose voices are respected and feared.
We sensitized the community on the bad vices of early marriage for girls.

CAMPAIGN INNOVATIONS

To provide recreation facilities for girls and educate those of child-bearing age on the importance of education for girls.

CAMPAIGN IMPACT

Parents found wanting will appear before the area chiefs and the government ministry of Gender and Child development.

CHALLENGES FACED

1. Lack of Transport
2. Project funding

(We are using bicycles hence failing to reach the targeted areas, and this is at its worst in the rainy season.

LESSONS LEARNT

The parents are ignorant about the importance of the welfare of girls. They think girls are only good for the kitchen.
They haven't recognized the potential of girls. They need education.
