Stop killing the Itsekiri people

The Ijaws and Urhibos of Warri North local government area of Delta State, with a population of over 8 million people, kept waging war against the Itsekiri people of the same region, with a population of less than a million.

The Itsekiris have fled their ancestrial homes, scattered all over Nigeria and are almost extinct. The most recent saga is the Ijaw and Itsekiri crisis, which lasted for over 5 years.

Barrister Rita took the matter up with the federal government and to the United Nations 2015 Minority Forum. She presented the case of Nigeria and the Itsekiri people in a 2-day minority Forum on 24 and 25 November 2015.

CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES

To put a stop to the incessant tribal war between the Ijaws and Itsekiris, which have left thousands of people dead -especially harmless women and children - and several villages were burnt down and deserted, turning many into internally displaced persons in their own country.

HOW THE OBJECTIVES WERE ACHIEVED

Through advocacy, she took the matter to the United Nations 2015 Minority Fellowship, did a presentation on the issue to the UN 2015 minority forum in a 2-day meeting, on 24 and 25 of November.

On her return from the UN, the state government invited her comments for a potential solution to the problem.

She recommended a peace building workshop and seminar and the signing of a peace accord, a peace rally and a formal exchange of visit by the communities to assure people of achieving a lasting peace.

CAMPAIGN INNOVATIONS

Involving the international community (United Nations), making a presentation to the international community to expose the abuse of minority and indigenous people's rights and the inefficiency of the state and federal government to step in.
